FURTHER INFORMATION:

The EPA is the authority responsible for granting and enforcing licences for significant waste disposal and recovery activities listed in the Third and Fourth Schedules to the Waste Management and POE Acts. Waste facilities not licensable by the EPA may be subject to regulation by the local authority.

In General the waste activities that require a Licence from the EPA are as follows:

  1. The disposal of waste at a landfill facility.
  2. The disposal or recovery of hazardous waste other than under a Cert. issued to the Local Authority for recovery (see below)
  3. The disposal of waste at a non-landfill facility where the annual intake exceeds 5,000 tonnes for a private operator and all facilities operated by or on behalf of Local Authority.
  4. The recovery of waste at a non-landfill facility operated by or on behalf of a Local Authority, where the annual intake exceeds 5000 tonnes or the composting of waste at a facility where the amount of waste and compost held at the facility at any one time exceeds 1000 tonnes.
